City of Congonhas

Congonhas is a Brazilian municipality in Minas Gerais, famous for the artwork of Aleijadinho. His twelve soapstone figures before the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, is a pilgrimage site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. The town grew with gold mining, and iron ore later remade its economy. The municipality lies in the central part of Minas Gerais, in Brazil's Southeast Region. It covers about 300 km2 (120 sq mi), including 22.8 km2 (8.8 sq mi) of urban area. The 2022 census counted 52,890 inhabitants.
