City of Morlaix
Morlaix (French: [mɔʁlɛ]; approximately mor-LEH; Breton: Montroulez) is a commune and subprefecture in the Finistère department of Brittany in northwestern France. The town developed at the head of the Morlaix ria, where the Jarlot and Queffleuth rivers meet before reaching the English Channel. Its historic centre occupies the narrow valley around their confluence, while the modern town extends onto the surrounding plateaus. This setting shaped the development of its port and street pattern and continues to make the centre vulnerable to flooding.
Documented from the 12th century as a fortified town, Morlaix became an important commercial centre during the later Middle Ages. Its greatest prosperity came from the linen trade, particularly the export of crées produced in the surrounding region to markets including England and the Iberian Peninsula. The wealth of its merchants is reflected in the surviving timber-framed houses of the 15th and 16th centuries, including the distinctive maisons à pondalez. The town's economy later diversified with the establishment of a large tobacco manufacture in the 18th century.
During the 19th century, the arrival of the Paris–Brest railway and extensive urban redevelopment transformed Morlaix. The railway crosses the centre on the Morlaix Viaduct, which has become the town's most prominent landmark. After the Second World War, urban development increasingly extended onto the surrounding plateaus and into neighbouring communes, while traditional industries underwent restructuring. Morlaix remains an administrative, commercial and employment centre for northern Finistère and is the seat of Morlaix Communauté.
