City of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Russian: Ю́жно-Сахали́нск, IPA: [ˈjuʐnə səxɐˈlʲinsk] , lit. 'South Sakhalin City') is a city and the administrative center of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia. It is located on the island of Sakhalin in the Russian Far East, north of Japan. Population: 181,587 (2021 census). The city was called Vladimirovka (Влади́мировка) from 1882 to 1905, then Toyohara (Japanese: 豊原市, Hepburn: Toyohara-shi) under Imperial Japanese control from 1905 to 1946. Gas and oil extraction as well as processing are amongst the main industries on the island.
