About This Service
Data sources, methodology and the limits you should know before relying on a prediction.
Data and credits
- Terrain: SRTM elevation data (NASA and USGS, public domain), converted by Map For HAM into elevation tiles and served from this site. No third-party service is used in the calculation.
- Base map: © OpenStreetMap contributors, displayed with Leaflet. Only the picture of the map is loaded from outside.
- Method: the MFH Coverage Engine is an independent implementation. It follows the physical principles described in public ITU-R recommendations (noise, diffraction, ionospheric absorption) but is not a reproduction of any official software. See how it works.
- Solar flux and Kp: entered by you or, when available, taken from the live data of the HF propagation section.
Limits
- Results are estimates with a statistical spread, not guarantees. Use them to compare options and to plan, and confirm with real measurements.
- The elevation data do not include buildings and trees. At the receiver an environment loss stands in for them.
- Sporadic-E, ducting, scatter and rain fade are not modelled. They can open paths far beyond the prediction or close a link in bad weather.
- The terrain has a resolution of about 75 to 600 m per point depending on your choice. A narrow ridge or a single building can matter more than the tool can see.
- The tool is not suitable for safety-of-life, aviation or licensing decisions.
Privacy
All calculations run in your browser. The positions you enter are not uploaded or stored. The only requests are for the map pictures and for the elevation tiles around your transmitter, which come from this site.
Coverage values are estimates computed by MFH and are indicative only. Elevation data: SRTM, NASA/USGS (public domain). Methodology · About and limits · Live HF propagation data
